UN Security Council condemns Kohat terrorist attack that killed 23 people, calls for accountability for perpetrators and sponsors.
The UN Security Council issued a statement Wednesday strongly condemning last week’s terrorist attack on a police compound in Pakistan’s Kohat district that killed at least 23 people. The Council called for perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors to be held accountable and urged all states to cooperate with Pakistan in the investigation.
- ▪The September 18 attack involved a suicide bombing at a mosque during Friday prayers followed by a militant assault on police facilities in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
- ▪Death toll: 17 police officers and 6 civilians killed; 8 militants were killed in retaliatory action by security forces.
- ▪The Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Ittehadul Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack.
- ▪Council President Jérôme Bonnafont, representing France, issued the statement describing the bombing as ‘heinous and cowardly.’
- ▪UNSC members stressed that terrorism in all forms poses one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
- ▪On Monday, Pakistan’s armed forces conducted airstrikes on terrorist sites in the border region with Afghanistan, killing more than 28 militants in retaliation for recent KP attacks.
- ▪A clearance operation concluded Saturday after security forces and Elite Force commandos swept key parts of the police compound.
- ▪Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Peshawar Corps headquarters to reaffirm commitment to defeating terrorism.
