Pakistan PM arrives at UN to address regional security, Gaza crisis

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in New York to attend the 81st UN General Assembly session, where he will address global leaders on September 25. His address will focus on Pakistan’s stance on regional conflicts, the Gaza crisis, Kashmir, and global security challenges amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.

• ▪PM Sharif will address UNGA on Sept 25, presenting Pakistan’s position on dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful conflict resolution amid US-Iran tensions.
• ▪Deputy PM Ishaq Dar arrived Monday ahead of the PM to hold bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from France, Egypt, EU, and Palestinian observers.
• ▪Pakistan plans to emphasize its mediation efforts for regional stability and draw attention to Kashmir and Palestine as priority issues for the international community.
• ▪Dar met French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot; both sides discussed the Iran crisis, maritime security, and the need for continued diplomatic engagement.
• ▪Dar also met Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty to reaffirm ties and coordinate under the Regional Four (R4) framework on Middle East developments.
• ▪Pakistan will participate in OIC Contact Group meeting on Kashmir and high-level ministerial meetings on Palestine and the two-state solution.
• ▪The UNGA debate runs Sept 22-26, with the session theme ‘Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.’
• ▪Dar will deliver a UN Security Council statement on artificial intelligence and chair a meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organisation’s Council of Ministers.
• ▪Pakistan’s delegation has been streamlined as part of austerity measures, with only the PM, Deputy PM, and senior adviser Tariq Fatemi forming the core team.
• ▪The US-Iran conflict and security of the Strait of Hormuz are expected to dominate UNGA discussions among world leaders this week.
